Dr. Wal van Lierop is the President and CEO of Chrysalix, which ranked the world's most active cleantech investor in 2010. Chrysalix' investments in a broad portfolio of energy companies are facilitating the solutions required to shape a sustainable urban future.
Wal is Co-Founder, President & CEO of Chrysalix, where he is responsible for strategy and operations of the Chrysalix funds. He actively supports a number of portfolio companies holding board positions with HydroPoint and Angstrom Power (Chairman), and is an Observer with Bridgelux. He was previously involved with Day4Energy which Chrysalix exited with a significant return. Before co-founding Chrysalix, Wal was VP of Strategic Planning at Westcoast Energy where he was responsible for identifying and investing in new energy technologies. He also initiated the successful sale of Westcoast’s Natural Gas Exchange (NGX) to OM Gruppen from Sweden.
For seven years prior to Westcoast, Wal was with McKinsey & Company as an international management consultant. Before McKinsey, he worked for approximately ten years in various positions at the Vrije University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands consulting with businesses, government, and major international institutions such as the European Community and the World Bank. Wal is a part-time adjunct professor teaching Venture Capital and Entrepreneurial Finance in the MBA program at the University of British Columbia. He is the founder and a Director of New Ventures BC, a successful new ventures and business plan competition, has been on the Advisory Board of the Cleantech Group LLC for many years, and is a founding member of the Alliance of Cleantech CEOs of British Columbia. He is also a member of the Clean Energy Tech Advisory Committee of the BCTIA.
